Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 60 of 165

Al-An'am 6:60

“And it is He who takes your souls by night[312] and knows what you have committed by day. Then He revives you therein [i.e., by day] that a specified term[313] may be fulfilled. Then to Him will be your return; then He will inform you about what you used to do.”

Essence

Each night He takes you whole and each morning hands you back, knowing what your hands caught that day, until the named day.

A reflection

The nightly surrender of the self-made

Every night, without exception, you hand yourself over. Your plans, your arguments, your sense of being in charge: all of it goes slack at once. The ayah names who receives it. Wa-huwa alladhī yatawaffākum bi-l-layl: He is the One who takes you in full by night.

The verb is strong. Its root means completing, taking a thing whole. A debt collected to the last coin was istawfā. The Arabs used the same word for death: Allah took him in full. Here it is used for sleep. One classical reading calls sleep the lesser taking, and death the greater (39:42).

Picture the founder of a technology company who tells every interviewer he needs four hours of sleep. On a late train home after a pitch, he nods off mid-email. His mouth falls open. His phone slides from his hand, and a stranger catches it before it hits the floor. For twenty minutes the man who runs four hundred people cannot run his own jaw.

This is where the ego shrinks. Pride tells us we are self-made and self-sustaining. Yet no one has ever chosen the exact moment they fall asleep. No one has ever woken themselves up from the inside. Every night the most powerful person on earth becomes as helpless as a newborn. Every morning he is handed back, and he did nothing to earn the return.

Why would Allah remind us of this? Not because He needs our admission. He is the Rich, beyond all need (35:15). The reminder is for us. A person who knows he is held each night can stop pretending to hold everything. The humility here is not humiliation. It is the relief of putting down a weight that was never ours to carry.
