An-Nisa · Madani · ayah 147 of 176
An-Nisa 4:147
مَّا يَفْعَلُ ٱللَّهُ بِعَذَابِكُمْ إِن شَكَرْتُمْ وَءَامَنتُمْ ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ شَاكِرًا عَلِيمًا
“What would Allāh do with [i.e., gain from] your punishment if you are grateful and believe? And ever is Allāh Appreciative[228] and Knowing.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah gains nothing from punishing anyone; what He wants is gratitude and faith, and He is the One who appreciates even the smallest good.
A reflection
What would Allah do with your punishment?
Mā yafʿalu Allāhu bi-ʿadhābikum in shakartum wa-āmantum: what would Allah do with your punishment, if you are grateful and believe?
After ten ayat of warning, the passage ends with a question, and it is almost tender. Two commentators spell out what it rules out. Would He punish you to cool His anger? To take revenge? To gain some benefit, or ward off some harm, as kings do with their punishments? He is the absolutely Rich, above every one of these. Another adds: punishing His servants adds nothing to His kingdom, and leaving it takes nothing from His authority.
That is humbling, because it exposes how we imagine power. Human punishment is so often about the punisher. Our wounded pride, our need to be obeyed, our anger looking for an outlet. We quietly assume Allah must be like that, only bigger.
Picture a man of forty whose father punished in rage. Every mistake in childhood meant shouting, then silence for days. He has prayed for years, but always with a knot in his stomach, as if waiting for the shout. One evening he reads this ayah slowly. What would Allah do with your punishment? He puts the Quran down and sits very still. For the first time, he wonders whether he has been praying to his father's face.
A sceptic may ask whether Allah needs our gratitude and faith, then. He does not. He is the Free of need (35:15). Whoever is grateful is grateful for his own good (31:12).
The ego wants a God who needs it, or a God who fears it. This ayah offers neither. It offers a God who needs nothing, and wants good for you anyway.
