An-Nisa 4:33

“And for all, We have made heirs to what is left by parents and relatives. And to those whom your oaths have bound [to you] - give them their share.[181] Indeed Allāh is ever, over all things, a Witness.”

Essence

Everything you leave already has someone appointed to it, every pledge you made is owed its share, and Allah was present for all of it.

A reflection

The Witness at every handshake

The ayah ends: inna Allāha kāna ʿalā kulli shayʾin shahīdā. Allah has always been Witness over all things.

The lexicons say sh-h-d joins three things: being present, knowing, and making known. The tongue was called al-shāhid, the one that tells what the eye saw. A wife was mushhid when her husband was at home. Shahāda is never hearsay. It is what you say because you were there.

A concise commentary draws out what that means here. Among the things Allah witnesses are your oaths and covenants. Another says He is aware of all your deeds and will recompense them.

Think about how most promises are made. In a hurry, at a moment of need, with a handshake or a message. Later, when keeping them costs something, we quietly reinterpret them. Nobody wrote it down. Circumstances changed. He knew I didn't really mean it. The ego is a skilled lawyer for its own convenience.

The ayah puts a Witness in the room. Not a notary, not a camera, but the One who was present at every handshake and knows exactly what was meant. The pledge you made at twenty, the promise to a dying friend, the word you gave a business partner: He was there.

And the ayah begins with another majestic claim: wa-li-kullin jaʿalnā mawāliya. For everyone, We have appointed heirs. You do not decide where your wealth goes after you. He has already decided, and He witnesses whether the living honour it.

Does Allah need to remind us that He watches? He is the Free of need (35:15). The reminder protects the weak party in every agreement, the one who cannot afford a lawyer. And it protects us from becoming people whose word means nothing.

Pride assumes its promises belong to it, to keep or bend. Humility remembers they were made in front of Someone.
