An-Nisa 4:34

“Men are in charge of women[182] by [right of] what Allāh has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allāh would have them guard.[183] But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance[184] - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them [lightly].[185] But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allāh is ever Exalted and Grand.”

Essence

A verse quoted for one verb is really a whole sentence: a trigger, three steps, a hard stop, and Allah named above every husband.

A reflection

The last words are addressed to the man

Anyone who has been the bigger person in a room knows how quietly power starts to talk. The line manager holding the rota. The landlord holding the keys. The husband who is taller, louder, and the one who pays.

This ayah gives a husband real authority, and then does something authority rarely does. It ends by naming Someone above him. The words 'Allah is ever High, Great' come straight after 'if they obey you, seek no way against them'.

The commentaries read the two names as aimed at the husband. One explains: they are too weak to repel your wrong or get justice from you. Allah is High and Great, and He will take their right from you. Do not be fooled because your hand is higher than theirs.

Sahih Muslim preserves a scene that makes the same point. A Companion was beating his young servant with a whip. A voice behind him called his name: Allah has more power over you than you have over this boy. He turned, saw the Prophet ﷺ, and set the boy free.

The commentaries draw further mirrors from the two names. The High One accepts anyone who turns back, so accept her turning. He asks no one beyond their capacity, so do not demand her love. He judges by what is outward, so stop searching her heart.

This is where the ego has to shrink. A man who reads this ayah for permission has stopped one line too early. Its final words put him under a gaze far heavier than any he holds.

Does Allah need to be called High? He needs nothing (35:15). The man with the upper hand needs to hear it, at the very moment he is tempted to forget.
