An-Nisa 4:52
“Those are the ones whom Allāh has cursed; and he whom Allāh curses - never will you find for him a helper.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Those who bowed to falsehood to win helpers are driven far from Allah's mercy, and whoever He drives away will find no helper anywhere.
A reflection
No one can help against Him
Wa-man yalʿani Allāhu fa-lan tajida lahu naṣīrā: and whoever Allah drives away, you will never find for him a helper.
This is a statement about who holds help itself. The root n-ṣ-r pictures good that reaches someone. The Arabs said rain naṣara the earth: it helped the ground, watering it until it grew. The streams that ran from far off and swelled a valley's flood were nawāṣir, helpers. Help, in this picture, is something that flows in from outside you.
The ayah declares that every such stream has one Source. If He withholds His mercy, no other stream can reach. One classical commentator explains: no helper to shield him from punishment, in this world or the next, by intercession or anything else.
That is majesty, and it humbles a particular pride. The ego loves to gather backing: allies, followers, connections, numbers. It feels safer with a crowd behind it. The people in this passage had travelled a long way to secure exactly that kind of backing. The ayah says that all of it, together, cannot outweigh one decision of Allah.
Is it unworthy of a merciful God to drive anyone away? Look at what laʿn means. The lexicons give the root a single sense: driving away and keeping far off. It is not an outburst. It is distance. One classical commentator explains the cause: their stubborn rejection, after knowledge. The distance answers a direction they had already chosen.
And the same commentator draws out the reverse, which is the ayah's hidden promise. The believers are the opposite: those whom Allah has brought near. And whoever He brings near, you will never find anyone able to abandon him.
So stop collecting backers as if they were your safety. Seek nearness to the One who holds every stream of help. Then you are never truly unsupported.
