An-Nisa 4:58
“Indeed, Allāh commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allāh instructs you. Indeed, Allāh is ever Hearing and Seeing.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Hand every trust in full to its owner, and judge between people with balance; the One who commands it hears and sees it all.
A reflection
He hears the verdict, He sees the handover
The ayah begins and ends with the Name. Inna Allāha yaʾmurukum: truly Allah commands you. And it closes: inna Allāha kāna samīʿan baṣīrā, truly Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
One classical commentator notes the weight of that opening. It starts with 'truly', names Allah outright, and gives the command as a plain statement of fact. All of it, he says, signals how much the matter matters.
One classical theologian draws out why the ayah ends with these two names. If you judge with justice, He hears the judgement. If you return a trust, He sees it returned. He adds a further subtlety. The greater people's need, the fuller His care. Judges and those in charge hold other people's welfare in their hands. So the ayah closes by reminding them that nothing they do escapes Him.
That is majesty, and it is aimed squarely at the ego. Power and trust tempt the ego to forget that what it holds belongs to someone else. A manager starts to feel the budget is his. A guardian starts to feel the orphan's money is hers. A judge starts to feel his opinion is the law. The ayah answers: you are holding it, and He is watching how.
Why would the One who needs nothing (35:15) care about deposits, keys and verdicts? Because we need them. Trust and justice are the air a community breathes. He commands them for our sake, not His.
The Prophet ﷺ described the highest level of faith in these terms. Both Sahihs record it: to worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, He sees you.
So the next time something is placed in your hands, a secret, a budget, a decision, picture it held in full view. Because it is.
