An-Nisa 4:69

“And whoever obeys Allāh and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allāh has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.”

Essence

The reward of obedience is named as company: the prophets, the truthful, the witnesses and the righteous, and how excellent they are to travel with.

A reflection

The man who was afraid of missing him

The commentaries preserve a cluster of early reports about why this ayah came down. Most of them reach us without full chains, so they are best held gently. One version was judged by a classical hadith scholar to have no harm in its chain. The shape they share is unforgettable.

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ looking drawn and sad. Asked what was wrong, he said: you are dearer to me than myself and my family. At home I think of you, and cannot rest until I come and see you. Then I remembered death. You will be raised with the prophets. Even if I enter Paradise, I fear I will not see you.

The Prophet ﷺ did not answer him. Then this ayah came, and he sent for the man to give him the good news.

Sahih al-Bukhari records a scene with the same heartbeat. A man asked when the Hour would come. The Prophet ﷺ asked: what have you prepared for it? The man said: nothing much, except that I love Allah and His Messenger. He replied: you will be with those you love. Anas said: nothing ever made us happier than those words. Then he added: I love the Prophet, Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, and hope to be with them, though my deeds are not like theirs.

Notice what these Companions were afraid of. Not hellfire, in that moment. Separation. Their deepest hope was not a place but a person.

The ayah answers that fear directly. Obedience leads to company. The road of 4:68 does not end in a lonely arrival. It ends among people you have loved from a distance all your life.
