An-Nisa 4:97
“Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves[212] - [the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." They [the angels] will say, "Was not the earth of Allāh spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.”

Essence
Asked at death what state their faith was in, some plead weakness; the angels reply that Allah's earth was wide enough to move.
A reflection
Whose earth is it?
The angels' reply turns on two words: arḍu Allāh, Allah's earth. Not the earth of Makkah. Not the earth of the clan that held them down.
Those who stayed behind spoke as if their small world were the whole world. Whoever held power in that valley seemed to hold everything. The angels' question puts that power back in its place. The ground under the oppressor's feet was never his. It belongs to Allah, and it is wāsiʿa.
Wāsiʿa has a generous root. A vessel wasiʿa its goods when it had room to hold them all. People tawassaʿū in a gathering when they shifted along to make space for a newcomer. In that picture, Allah's earth is a gathering that always has room for one more.
This humbles two kinds of ego. The arrogance of the powerful, who behave as if their corner were a kingdom. And the quieter pride in us that decides our narrow situation is all there is, as though our view were the measure of His world.
Picture a girl raised in a valley where one family decided who married, who worked and who was spoken to. At eighteen she spins the globe in a college library, looking for home. Her valley is not marked. She has to find the nearest city and guess. For the first time, the family that ruled her life looks small.
Does Allah need His ownership announced? No. He loses nothing if we forget it. The announcement is for the one who feels trapped, and for the one who imagines he owns the trap.
Whose small 'land' do you live in, inwardly, as if it were the whole earth?
