As-Sajdah 32:19
“As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them will be the Gardens of Refuge as accommodation for what they used to do.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Those who believed and repaired what they touched come home at nightfall to Gardens that are theirs, and find the welcome meal already laid.
A reflection
Not a wage, a welcome
It is three in the morning when the coach finally reaches the town. A young man drags his case up his aunt's path, expecting a dark house. The porch light is on. On the kitchen table there is a covered plate, still warm, and a note: your bed is made.
Most people, asked to describe Paradise, reach for the language of reward: a prize, a payment, a pay-off for being good. This ayah chooses a different word. Nuzulan: as hospitality.
The commentaries agree on the picture. Nuzul is what is prepared for a guest who arrives. One concise commentary calls it what is made ready for the guest. Another says hospitality and honour. The lexicons trace the root to a traveller dismounting at a camp and setting down his load. His hosts bring out what they have prepared for him. An old verse, they note, says the guest has the greatest right of all.
So the ayah frames the Garden not as wages counted out at a till, but as a house that was expecting you. The food is already on the table when you arrive.
One theological commentary sees something more in the word. Nuzul, it says, is what a king gives an arriving guest on the day he arrives, before any regular allowance is fixed. The Gardens themselves are only the welcome. What follows the welcome is not described here, and the ayah before has already said it is hidden.
That turns a familiar picture inside out. The rivers and fruit and dwellings, which we imagine as the whole of Paradise, are the plate kept warm on the kitchen table. The Host is what the visit is for.
The young man at his aunt's door does not think he earned the warm plate. He knows he was expected. That is the feeling this word was chosen to give.
