Ash-Shuraa 42:27
“And if Allāh had extended [excessively] provision for His servants, they would have committed tyranny throughout the earth. But He sends [it] down in an amount which He wills. Indeed He is, of His servants, Aware and Seeing.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah measures out provision with full knowledge of His servants, because unlimited wealth for everyone would turn them into tyrants on earth.
A reflection
The nurse who will not bring the jug
The ayah closes on two of Allah's names. He is, concerning His servants, Khabīr and Baṣīr: All-Aware, All-Seeing. The commentaries spell out what that awareness covers. He knows what will reform each servant and what will ruin them. Wealth and poverty, plenty and scarcity: He knows the effect of each on each person. And He sees how to steer every one of them towards what is good for them.
That is a humbling thought for the ego. We tend to assume we know exactly what we need. More money, a bigger house, an easier year. The ayah gently says: you do not know yourself as well as He knows you.
The Prophet ﷺ gave an image for this. When Allah loves a servant, he said, He protects him from the world. He does so just as one of you keeps water from a sick relative (al-Tirmidhi, graded ṣaḥīḥ).
Picture a man waking after abdominal surgery, his mouth like sandpaper. He begs the night nurse for a jug of water. She refuses, gently, and moistens his lips with a damp swab instead. To him, at two in the morning, she seems almost cruel. By the morning round, he understands that a full glass could have undone the operation.
A proud person might object. If He controls who gets what, does He then need us to accept His measure and praise Him for it? No. He is the Free of need, and people are the ones in need of Him (35:15). His measuring costs Him nothing and gains Him nothing. The whole benefit of it flows to us.
The arrogance the ayah warns against is ours, not His. Given too much, people overreach. The measure is His mercy holding us back from ourselves.
So when you are denied something you wanted badly, try saying quietly: He is aware of His servants, seeing. He has seen something about me that I have not.
