Az-Zukhruf 43:11

“And who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land - thus will you be brought forth -”

Saheeh International

Essence

Rain in measure spreads a dead land green again; that is how you will be brought out, and the words for each quietly swap.

A reflection

When the speaker becomes 'We'

The ayah begins in the third person: the One who sent down water from the sky. Then, mid-sentence, the voice changes. Fa-ansharnā: so We revived a dead land with it.

One commentary explains the shift. The turn to the plural of majesty shows the fullness of care given to this act of reviving. It signals how great a matter it is. The giving of rain is spoken of from a distance. The bringing of life is claimed in the first person.

The ego quietly assumes otherwise. When the garden recovers after a drought, we credit the sprinkler, the soil, the weather forecast, ourselves for having planted well. Revival feels like a natural process we oversee.

Picture a city park at the end of a long dry summer. The grass is the colour of straw. A man walking his dog has spent August complaining about the council letting it die. Then one night a thunderstorm rolls through. Four days later he crosses the same park and stops. The ground is green again, edge to edge. Nobody watered it. Nobody planned it. He stands there with the lead slack in his hand.

That is the moment the ayah wants to catch. The voice that says We revived is close enough to be heard. It is not describing a system. It is claiming an act.

Someone might ask why Allah speaks of Himself in this way, so emphatically. Is it not self-assertion? It is a correction of our attention. We are inclined to see revival as automatic and therefore owed to nobody. The 'We' says: this was done, and done with care. The proper response is not anxiety but awe, and a smaller sense of our own part.
