Ash-Shuraa 42:6

“And those who take as allies other than Him - Allāh is [yet] Guardian over them; and you, [O Muḥammad], are not over them a manager -”

Essence

Whatever people lean on instead of Allah, He keeps every account, and the one who calls them is a messenger, not their keeper.

A reflection

A mother counting four heads on a beach

"Allah is ḥafīẓ over them." The commentaries explain it plainly. He keeps their deeds, counts them and watches over their states, and nothing escapes Him. One says there is no watcher over them but Him alone.

The root ḥ-f-ẓ gave the first hearers vivid pictures. A herdsman keeping his camels: pasturing, tending, defending them. A man whose eye sleep could not overcome. A clear desert road that never faded out, because it kept its track. The lexicons sum the root up as paying such close attention to a thing that it is not lost. Its opposite is forgetting.

Picture a mother on a crowded beach with four small children. She is talking to a friend, pouring drinks, finding sun cream. Yet every half-minute, without thinking, her eyes count: one, two, three, four. If a number goes missing, she is on her feet before the friend has finished a sentence. Nothing in her day is more alert than that counting.

Now raise that picture beyond all comparison. Every human being, every act, every hidden intention, is kept like that, and none is ever lost. Not because Allah strains to watch, but because nothing can fall outside His attention.

That should quieten the ego. We act as if our small evasions vanish once the moment passes. The unkind word in a meeting, the corner cut at work, the promise we let lapse. We forget them by evening. They are not forgotten.

Some hear this as surveillance, a God with a camera on every corner. But notice that ḥafīẓ is the same word used for a guardian. The one who keeps the record is the one who keeps the flock safe. The mother counting heads is not spying on her children. She counts because she loves them and will not lose one.

So the ayah carries two edges. To those who turn away, it is a warning: every deed is kept, to be answered for. To anyone who turns towards Him, the same word is a comfort. Nothing you do for Him is lost either.
