Al-An'am 6:107
“But if Allāh had willed, they would not have associated. And We have not appointed you over them as a guardian, nor are you a manager over them.[337]”

Essence
Had Allah willed, they would not have set up partners; and you were never made their guard, nor the manager of their affairs.
A reflection
The champion who never changed a mind
A university debating champion has won every round for three years. He can take apart any argument in four minutes. Privately, he believes that if he could only debate every atheist on campus, they would all believe. One night a friend asks him gently: 'How many people have actually changed their minds because of you?' He thinks for a long time. He cannot name one.
This ayah speaks to that quiet pride. Wa law shāʾa Allāhu mā ashrakū: had Allah willed, they would not have set up partners. One early report gives Allah's meaning in His own voice. Had I willed, I would have gathered them all upon guidance. Hearts are not won by the cleverest speaker. They are turned by the One who owns them.
The word for 'willed' has a striking relative. One classical derivation links shāʾa, to will, with shayʾ, the ordinary Arabic word for 'a thing'. On that reading a 'thing' is simply 'what is willed'. Every object in the room carries in its very name the will that brought it about.
That is where the ego shrinks. The preacher, the parent, the teacher and the debater all secretly hope to be the cause of someone's faith. It is a humbling thing to hear that we never were. We are invited to speak, explain and plead. The turning belongs to Him.
A fair question follows. Is it not arrogant for Allah to claim every heart as His? Arrogance is claiming what is not yours. This is simply what is true. And notice why the ayah says it. One commentary explains it was meant to lift a weight from the Prophet ﷺ: do not let their disbelief burden you. His majesty here is not a boast. It is relief.
