Ad-Dukhan 44:16

يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ ٱلْبَطْشَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ إِنَّا مُنتَقِمُونَ

“The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution.”

Saheeh International

Essence

After the brief lifting comes a day of the greatest seizing, when the One whose greatness is real repays a rejection that was never withdrawn.

A reflection

The hand on the bully's shoulder

Picture a school playground at break. An older boy has a younger one pinned against the fence, his fist twisted in the boy's collar. He is enjoying his strength. Then a hand settles on his own shoulder. He looks up, and the head teacher is standing over him, saying nothing. His grip loosens at once. His strength was real a moment ago. It now looks very small.

The Makkan leaders who appear in these ayat held a grip on their city. They controlled its trade, its shrine, its alliances. They could pin a young movement against the fence and squeeze. This ayah describes the hand that settles on their shoulder: nabṭishu al-baṭshata al-kubrā, We will seize with the greatest seizing.

The lexicons say kubrā comes from a root of plain size, the opposite of small, and they draw a line that matters. For Allah, greatness is His true state. In us, greatness is raising the self above what it deserves, because our state is small.

That definition is the whole lesson of this ayah for the ego. Human pride is a borrowed size, worn for a season, sustained by the grip we have on others. The greatest seizing reveals what was always true. Only One is great in Himself.

Some hear this as God boasting of His power to crush. But read the ayah in its place. It comes after warning, mercy, a clear messenger, a lifted punishment and a broken promise. The greatest seizing is not a show of strength for its own sake. It is the end of a long patience, and only for those who returned to what they had promised to leave.

The humble response is to loosen any grip we hold over others now, before the hand settles on our own shoulder.
