Ad-Dukhan 44:22

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ قَوْمٌ مُّجْرِمُونَ

“And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Having tried everything, Musa lays the case before his Lord in one line, these are a criminal people, and leaves the verdict with Him.

A reflection

A prayer that states the case and stops

Look at the shape of Musa's prayer. It contains no request. It is a statement: these are a criminal people.

One commentator explains what is folded inside that line. It is as if Musa said: these are a criminal people, and their disbelief has reached its limit. You know them best, so do with them what they deserve. The Qur'an mentions only the reason, he says, so that both the prayer and its answer are understood together. He calls it one of the eloquent compressions of the inimitable Book.

That is a remarkable way to pray. Musa does not dictate the punishment, or the timing, or the means. He lays the case before the Judge and trusts the Judge to decide.

Picture an elderly woman in a hospital bed after a long illness. Her family have brought her prayer beads. She is too tired for long supplications. She does not list what she wants: recovery, less pain, to see her grandson married. She says quietly, again and again: O Allah, You see how it is. Then she rests.

She is not giving up on asking. She is trusting the One who already knows every request she might make.

The Qur'an records many detailed prayers, and the Prophet ﷺ taught many more. Asking in detail is good. But this ayah shows another form that belongs in every believer's life. Sometimes the most honest prayer is simply to tell Allah what is, and to leave what should be with Him.

The answer, the next ayah shows, was immediate and precise: travel by night with My servants. The One who heard the case already had the remedy.
