Ad-Dukhan 44:23
فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِى لَيْلًا إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ
“[Allāh said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The answer to Musa's prayer comes at once: take My servants out by night, and know in advance that you will be pursued.
A reflection
The pursuit was part of the plan
Most people, told that an army will chase them, would hear only danger. This ayah delivers the news as part of the instructions: travel by night with My servants; you will be followed.
One commentator explains what lay behind those words. Allah had arranged it so that you go ahead and Pharaoh's army follows, so that He saves those in front and drowns those behind. The pursuit was not a flaw in the escape. It was the hinge of the rescue.
Picture a sheepdog trial on a hillside. A stubborn ram keeps breaking away, trying to avoid the small pen at the bottom of the field. The dog never chases it directly. It circles, waits, and moves at exactly the right angle. Each time the ram runs to escape, it runs closer to the pen. In the end it trots in by itself, convinced it chose the way.
Pharaoh's army thought it was hunting. It was being herded towards the sea.
This is where human pride shrinks. We plan, scheme and pursue, and imagine we are in control of the chase. Pharaoh believed his chariots decided where things would end. The One who said 'you will be followed' had already decided where the following would lead.
It also humbles fear. The Israelites, hearing the hoofbeats behind them, must have felt the plan was failing. It was working exactly as told.
Some hear this as God manipulating people. But no one forced Pharaoh to pursue. He chose to chase a people he had been told to release. What Allah arranged was where that choice would carry him.
