Ad-Dukhan 44:4

فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ

“Therein [i.e., on that night] is made distinct[1460] every precise matter -”

Saheeh International

Essence

In one night the whole tangled year is combed apart, every matter set in its place with wisdom, while we are still writing our plans.

A reflection

The year is sorted before the planner is bought

On New Year's Day a woman sits at her kitchen table with a fresh planner. Each month gets a coloured tab. Each goal gets its own pen: green for health, blue for work, orange for the house she hopes to buy. By lunchtime the whole year is mapped. She feels, for an afternoon, like the author of it.

This ayah describes another table, and another year. Kullu amrin: every matter. The commentaries spell out what that includes. The lifespans of the coming year. The provision. Who will be born and who will die. The rain. One early report says even the pilgrims are written: this one will make the Hajj, and that one. Another says, starkly, that you see a man walking in the markets when his name has already fallen among the dead.

All of it is yufraqu, set out and made distinct, on a single night. The planner on the kitchen table is not the first draft of the year. It is a commentary written afterwards by someone who has not yet seen the text.

This is where the ego shrinks to its proper size. Human plans are not worthless; the Qur'an praises preparation elsewhere. But pride creeps in when we forget the order of things. We imagine the year waits on our decisions, when our decisions are themselves among the matters already set out.

Some hear this and feel diminished, even resentful. Why should anyone hold that much of my life? The ayah answers in its last word. Every matter is ḥakīm, wise. The One who sorts it is not careless or cruel, and the commentaries say each such matter is settled firmly, not changed on a whim.

The humble response is not to stop planning. It is to plan with the tab of each month quietly open to Him, writing 'if Allah wills' beside the boldest goals.
