Ad-Dukhan 44:3

إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةٍ مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ

“Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night.[1459] Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Book came down to us on a night where good kneels and stays, sent by the One who has always warned before He acts.

A reflection

It came down; we did not climb up

The sentence opens with a double emphasis: innā, truly We. Then the verb: anzalnāhu, We sent it down. Everything in it moves in one direction, from above to below. Nobody climbed up to fetch this Book. It was lowered.

That is worth sitting with, because the ego likes to think it found its own way to God. People speak of 'discovering' the Qur'an, 'getting into' religion, 'choosing' faith, as if the search were the heroic part. This ayah quietly reverses the picture. The search began from the other end. The Book was on its way down before anyone thought to look up.

Picture a climber stuck on a ledge at night. His phone is dying. He has shouted himself hoarse. Then the sound of rotors fills the valley, and a stretcher is lowered on a cable through the dark. He did nothing to bring it except be in danger. All that is left for him is to hold on.

That is the posture this verb asks for. Not pride in the finding, but gratitude for the lowering. The One who sent it down lost nothing by sending it and gains nothing when it is received. Its whole benefit lands below.

Some readers bristle at the 'We' and the 'truly'. It can sound like someone claiming credit. But notice what follows straight after. Not a demand for praise, but a reason that is entirely for the listener's sake: We have always been warning. The emphasis is placed on the gift so that the receiver does not shrug it off.

The humble response is simple. Before opening the Qur'an, remember which way it travelled. You are not condescending to read it. It came down to where you are.
