Essence

The surah ends where it began, with one word to the Prophet: watch, for they too are watching, and time will tell.

A reflection

The surah's first command, and its last

Fa-rtaqib innahum murtaqibūn: so watch; indeed, they are watching.

Near its opening, this surah gave the Prophet ﷺ a command. Fa-rtaqib: so watch for the Day when the sky brings a visible smoke (44:10). That smoke gave the surah its name.

Now, in its very last ayah, the same command returns. Fa-rtaqib. One linguistic commentary notes the link. The first was a watching for a particular event. This last one widens it: watch for everything that will befall them.

The surah opens and closes on the same word, like a ring.

An orchestra plays a long symphony. In the first minute, four notes sound, simple and unforgettable. Then come forty minutes of development, storms and quiet passages, themes that rise and fall. In the final moments, the four notes return. The audience recognises them at once. Now they mean far more than they did at the start.

That is what fa-rtaqib does at the end of Ad-Dukhān. At the beginning, it was a warning about smoke. Now it carries everything in between. Pharaoh and the sea. The people of Tubbaʿ. The Day of Sorting. The tree of zaqqūm. The gardens and springs. Watch, and you will see all of it come true.

The Quran's structure rewards those who read whole surahs, not only single ayat. Themes are planted and gathered. Words return changed. Reading Ad-Dukhān from its first fa-rtaqib to its last is like walking a circle and arriving home, seeing the place for the first time.
