Muhammad 47:20

“Those who believe say, "Why has a sūrah[1502] not been sent down?" But when a precise sūrah is revealed and battle is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them[1503] [would have been]”

Essence

Some asked for a clear command; when it came, others stared at the Prophet ﷺ with the fixed eyes of a dying man.

A reflection

Asking for the task, fleeing when it comes

"Why has a surah not been sent down?" The believers asked for it. Then a clear surah came, mentioning fighting, and some of those present turned pale.

One classical commentator describes the hypocrites' side of this exactly. They used to claim eagerness. They wished for it with their tongues and said: if only a surah would come down about it. When it came, and they were ordered to do what they had wished for, they shrank back. It weighed on them. Another commentator links it to a similar scene elsewhere. When fighting was prescribed, a group feared people as they should fear Allah, or more (4:77).

It is a very human pattern. People often ask for responsibility in the abstract, and flinch from it in the concrete.

Picture a sales representative who spends a whole year lobbying to lead his regional team. He says he is ready, that he would make the hard calls. He gets the job in March. In April, the company announces cuts. On the morning of his first difficult conversation with a long-serving colleague, he phones in sick.

Nobody doubted his ambition. What he had never tested was his readiness to carry what the role actually required.

The ayah does not mock people for feeling the weight of a command. It exposes the gap between what was said beforehand and what was done when the moment came. For anyone who seeks a position, a role or a responsibility, it is a useful question. Am I asking for the title, or for the task? And when the hard part arrives, will I be in the room?
