Muhammad 47:33
“O you who have believed, obey Allāh and obey the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds.”
Saheeh International
Essence
After a surah of other people's lost deeds, the believers are told directly: obey, and do not be the ones who spoil your own.
A reflection
When the Companions grew careful
The commentaries preserve two reports about how the first believers heard this ayah. Both are recorded in the commentaries, not in the graded collections, and they are offered here as what was remembered.
The first comes from an early follower. The Companions, he says, used to think that no sin could harm a person who held to "there is no god but Allah". Just as no deed could benefit someone who associated partners with Him. Then this ayah came: "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and do not invalidate your deeds". After that, they feared that sins could spoil their deeds.
The second, attributed to Ibn ʿUmar, is more detailed. We used to think, he said, that every good deed was accepted. Then this ayah came, and we asked what could spoil our deeds. We said: the major sins. Then came another ayah. "Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him". And "He forgives what is less than that, for whom He wills" (4:48). After that, we stopped speaking about it. We feared for those who committed major sins, and we hoped for those who did not.
That is a beautiful balance. Not complacency, and not despair. Fear and hope held together.
Picture a night security guard at a bank who has not had a single incident in twenty years. Every night, on every round, he still tries every door. A new colleague asks why, after so long. Because the one night I stop checking, he says, is the night it matters.
The first believers did not assume their deeds were safe. That carefulness is the posture this ayah was given to build.
