Al-Fath 48:1

إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًا مُّبِينًا

“Indeed, We have given you, [O Muḥammad], a clear conquest[1507]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah named a turned-back pilgrimage a clear opening, on the road home, before anyone could see what it had opened.

A reflection

Who filled the well

The ayah opens with innā, 'We', and the verb belongs to that We alone. Fataḥnā: We opened. Not 'you won'. Not 'your patience paid off'.

The root of fatḥ is the plain opposite of locking, and the lexicons let it spread. A door swung open is fatḥ. So is a judge's ruling, and water breaking out of a spring. That last sense was standing in the place itself. Al-Ḥudaybiya, one Companion explained, is a well.

Sahih al-Bukhari records what happened at it. Fourteen hundred people drew on it until not a drop was left. The Prophet ﷺ sat on its rim and called for water. He made ablution, rinsed his mouth, made dua and poured it in. A little later the well gave them all they wanted, riders and camels alike.

Fourteen hundred people had emptied it. Not one of them could fill it. That is the shape of the whole episode. They could drain, argue, sign and shave. The opening was not theirs to perform.

Here the ego is quietly sat down. We tell the story of our breakthroughs as if we engineered them. Picture a founder on a conference stage, explaining his big break: grit, vision, the perfect pitch. He leaves out one detail. The investor only read his email because her flight sat on the tarmac for three hours. Most openings in a life look like that from the inside. A door was unbolted from a side we could not reach.

Is this 'We' self-glorification, then, a King admiring His own deeds? Look at whom it was spoken to. They had just watched the pilgrimage they set out for slip from their hands. Many of them could not see the point of the terms at all. A ruler hungry for praise announces victories to be applauded. This one was announced to comfort people who looked defeated, and it asked them for nothing.

So hold the first picture. You can empty a well by yourself. Only its Owner fills it again.
