Qaf 50:39

“So be patient, [O Muḥammad], over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Bear what they say, and at the day's two edges, before sunrise and sunset, declare your Lord free of every flaw with His praise.

A reflection

They said worse about your Lord

A café owner reads a one-star review at closing time. It says the place is dirty and the staff are rude. Neither is true. She drafts a reply, deletes it, and drafts another. By midnight she has written four, each angrier than the last.

Now read the ayah where it stands. The ayah before it answered a claim made about Allah Himself: that creating the world had tired Him. Then comes this: 'So be patient over what they say.'

A classical scholar of the heart noticed the link. People had said of Allah what does not befit Him. So Allah told His Messenger to bear what they said about him, taking his Lord as his example.

A hadith in both Sahihs puts it plainly. No one is more patient over hurtful words He hears than Allah, the Prophet ﷺ said. They claim He has a son, yet He still gives them health and provision.

That reframes every one-star review of our lives. A false word about us feels like an unbearable injustice. Yet people say false things about Allah every day. They call Him tired, absent, cruel or imaginary. He does not rush to silence each one. He gives time, and keeps feeding those who say it.

And notice what the ayah asks next. Not 'defend yourself', but 'glorify with the praise of your Lord'. Tasbīḥ means declaring Him free of every flaw. When they speak falsely, you are told to clear His name, not yours.

There is relief in that switch. Your reputation is not the centre of the universe. His name needs no rescue from you, and yours is in His hands.

So the café owner might close the laptop. She might say subḥān Allāh wa bi-ḥamdih once, slowly. Then reply in the morning, briefly, or not at all. The false word has not changed. Its weight has.
