Qaf 50:45
“We are most knowing of what they say, and you are not over them a tyrant.[1533] But remind by the Qur’ān whoever fears My threat.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah knows every word said against His Messenger, who is sent not to force anyone but to remind, with the Quran, those who fear.
A reflection
The folder you no longer need to keep
Naḥnu aʿlamu bimā yaqūlūna: We know best what they say. The commentators hear two notes in it at once. To the Prophet ﷺ it is comfort: every insult is known, nothing is lost. To the deniers it is a warning: every word is known, nothing is forgotten.
One classical commentator draws out the comfort. Do not let complaint about them occupy you, he paraphrases. Busy yourself with patience and glorifying, as you were told. We know their words, and We see their deeds.
Picture a man who has kept a folder on his laptop for eleven years. It holds every critical email anyone ever sent about him. Every unfair appraisal, every cutting remark from a colleague. He opens it sometimes late at night, rereading, rehearsing replies he never sent. The folder has grown heavier than the job.
The ayah offers to take that folder off his hands. Allah already holds a complete record of what was said, with every motive behind it. He knows it better than the man ever could. The man is not needed as archivist of his own injuries.
This is where the ego is humbled. Part of us wants to be the one who remembers, who corrects, who has the last word. The ayah gently removes that role. The last word belongs to the One who knows best.
Why does Allah declare His knowledge like this? Not because He needs it acknowledged. He has no need of anyone (35:15). The declaration is for the wounded listener, so that he can finally put the folder down.
