Adh-Dhariyat 51:18
وَبِٱلْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ
“And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness,”
Saheeh International
Essence
At the end of their nights of prayer, in the hours before dawn, it was they who kept asking to be forgiven.
A reflection
The hood under the helmet
A motorcyclist comes off his bike on a wet roundabout. He walks away bruised. Later, at home, he turns his helmet over in his hands. There is a deep gouge in the shell, exactly where his skull would have struck the kerb. He sits down quietly. The helmet did not stop the fall. It covered him in it.
The verb yastaghfirūn, they seek forgiveness, comes from a root whose first picture is covering. The lexicons give it in several forms. A dark dye was said to cover dirt better. Goods were put away in a bag to cover them. A man covered his grey hair with dye. And the mighfar was the mail hood worn under the iron helmet, falling over the neck to guard it. This picture is established.
So the covering in maghfira does two things at once. It hides, and it protects. When Allah forgives, He covers the sin so that it is not exposed. And He guards the sinner from what the sin would have brought down on him.
That changes what seeking forgiveness feels like. It is not grovelling before an angry judge. It is reaching for the hood before the blow lands. In the hours before dawn, the people of this ayah were asking to be covered. Their faults hidden, their necks guarded, their lives protected from what they had earned.
The form of the verb matters too. Istaghfara is asking for that cover, actively seeking it, as a soldier reaches for his armour before battle.
Say astaghfirullāh once today slowly, with the picture in mind. Not "I am terrible", but "cover me, my Lord, and guard me".
