Adh-Dhariyat 51:21

وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ

“And in yourselves. Then will you not see?”

Saheeh International

Essence

The nearest evidence you will ever be shown is the one reading this sentence: look at yourself until you see who made you.

A reflection

The sign that carries itself around

The ayah before this one pointed at the earth: mountains, seas, the endless kinds of plant and animal. Then the camera turns round. Wa-fī anfusikum: and in yourselves. You do not have to travel to this sign. You are standing in it.

Picture a speaker at a business conference, a spotlight on his face. 'I built myself from nothing,' he says, and the room applauds. Every word of that sentence passed over a tongue he never designed. It was pushed out by lungs he does not run, and shaped by lips and teeth he did not place. The breath that carried his boast was lent to him a second earlier and taken back a second later.

The commentaries list what is in the self. There are the stages from a drop of fluid to a living frame, and the joints that let a body bend and turn. There are the different tongues and colours of people. Above all there is the heart, and the mind set inside it. One classical reading puts it plainly. Nothing else could create the way He created you, and that alone points to Him.

This is where the ego shrinks. Pride needs a self it can own. The ayah quietly shows you that the self you are proud of is the clearest evidence that you are not your own. Your talent is wiring you did not lay. Your memory is a room you did not build.

Someone may ask: why would God point to His own handiwork? Is He asking to be admired? He is free of any need, and our looking adds nothing to Him (35:15). The pointing is for the one who looks. Self-admiration in a creature is a lie about where its gifts came from. Recognising the Maker is simply the truth catching up with you.

So the humbling is also a relief. You were never meant to hold up your own existence.
