Adh-Dhariyat 51:24
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلْمُكْرَمِينَ
“Has there reached you the story of the honored guests of Abraham?[1539] -”
Saheeh International
Essence
A story opens with a question: strangers reach an old man's tent and are treated as the honoured guests they truly are.
A reflection
A question that makes you lean in
Hal atāka ḥadīthu: has the story reached you? It is not really a question. One commentator explains it as a way of making the story feel large and worth hearing. It also signals that the Prophet ﷺ could not have known it except by revelation.
The words are addressed first to him, and the timing matters. His own people were calling him a sorcerer or a madman. This surah will soon say every messenger before him heard the same (51:52). One classical scholar says the story was told partly to console him. Others before him were sent, doubted, and helped.
The same scholar notices something else. Ibrahim had no idea that judgement was about to fall on a nearby people. He was simply at home. Relief for the prophets and ruin for the stubborn both arrive from where no one expects (59:2).
Someone may ask why this story appears again. The commentaries note it was told before in Hud and al-Hijr. But each telling has its own job. Here it follows an oath about provision and promises (51:22-23). And what does the story contain? A meal provided, and a promise of a son. The surah has just said provision and promises come from the sky. Now it shows both landing at one man's door.
Think of a grandmother who tells the story of how she crossed a border with three children and a sewing machine. At a wedding she tells it as a story of luck. At a funeral it is about loss. When her grandson is afraid to leave home for university, it becomes a story about courage. The facts never change. The telling chooses what this listener needs.
So the opening question is personal. Has this story reached you, in what you are living now? The ayah turns a familiar narrative into fresh news, aimed at today's need.
