“Of how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honored."”
Saheeh International
Essence
He wished his people knew how his Lord forgave him and honoured him, so that they might walk the same road.
A reflection
Forgiveness first: the hood under the helmet
A junior architect miscalculates the load on a row of balconies. The senior partner finds the error at nine at night, two days before the drawings go out. He corrects it himself, says nothing to the client, and lets the deadline stand. The next morning he sits the young man down and goes through the sums with him, line by line.
That is close to the picture inside ghafara, the first thing this man names in the Garden. The root means to cover. The Arabs used it for putting goods away in a bag, and for dye that hides grey hair. Its sharpest image is the mighfar: the hood of mail worn under the iron helmet, falling over the neck to guard it. So the covering does two things at once. It hides, and it protects. When Allah forgives, He covers the sin, and He guards the servant from what it deserved.
Notice what comes first in his words. He has just been killed for his faith and admitted to the Garden. And the first thing he wishes his people knew is bi-mā ghafara lī rabbī: how my Lord forgave me. Not the palaces, not the rivers. Forgiveness.
One commentator observes that faith and righteous action bring two things in the Quran: forgiveness and honour. He points to another ayah where they come in the same order: forgiveness and a generous provision (34:4). Here too, the covering comes first, then the honour.
Even a man who gave his life for the truth knew he needed covering. That is a quiet rebuke to any self-satisfaction. None of us arrives on our record. We arrive covered, protected by a hood we did not make.
