Adh-Dhariyat 51:4
فَٱلْمُقَسِّمَـٰتِ أَمْرًا
“And the [angels] apportioning [each] matter,”
Saheeh International
Essence
The fourth oath is by the angels who share out Allah's command across creation, so that no rain, provision or ending arrives anywhere by accident.
A reflection
One command, shared out everywhere at once
Stand for a moment in an air-traffic control room at night. Dozens of screens, hundreds of aircraft, every one of them guided to its own runway at its own minute. It feels like the edge of what human beings can coordinate. And it covers one region of sky, for one night.
The fourth oath points beyond anything like that. Al-muqassimāt, the distributors, are by wide agreement the angels, who share out amr, the command, among creation. One commentary lists what they apportion: provision and rain among lands and servants. A classical writer on the heart widens the picture until it is almost too large to hold. Allah, he says, has assigned a company of angels to every work. To the sun and moon and stars, to rain and cloud, to plants, to the unborn child in the womb. To death, to guarding each human being, to recording every deed, to revelation, to the mountains.
The word amr is singular. One command, distributed across every corner of creation at every moment.
This is where the ego is meant to bow. We are proud of managing a team, running a household, keeping a diary in order. We bristle when something reaches us late or not at all, as though the universe were failing to consult us. Meanwhile rain is being portioned to valleys we will never see, and souls are being received in hospitals across the world. Each of those shares arrives exactly as commanded.
And your share is among them. That is the second movement of this oath, after the bowing. The One who commands all of it has not lost track of you. Whatever reached your door this morning, your provision, your trial, your ease, came through hands sent for that purpose.
He does not need the angels to run His creation, and He does not need your praise for running it. The oath is to calm you: the distribution is in hands far surer than yours.
