At-Tur 52:36

أَمْ خَلَقُوا۟ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ ۚ بَل لَّا يُوقِنُونَ

“Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain.”

Essence

From your own making the question widens to the sky and the ground: you made neither, and what you lack is not proof but certainty.

A reflection

From your fingernail to the sky

The previous ayah asked whether people made themselves. This one widens the frame suddenly. Or did they create the heavens and the earth?

A classical commentator described the movement. The previous ayah was the evidence within the self. This one is the evidence on the horizons. First you look at your own body, which you did not make. Then you lift your eyes to everything around you, which you did not make either.

A later commentator noted that the heavens and the earth are singled out for their greatness and nobility among created things. A scholar of the inner life drew the conclusion. Allah alone created the dwelling and the dweller. The upper world and the lower, and everything in them.

Picture a crane driver climbing into his cab at dawn, high above a city. Below him the streets are filling with cars like beads on a string. He can see the river, the stadium, the hills beyond the ring road. His own crane, which looks enormous from the ground, is a toothpick against the line of hills. For a moment the size of things presses on him. Then the radio crackles and he goes back to lifting steel.

The ayah wants to hold that moment longer. The ego is very good at feeling large. It works with the small things it can control: a project, a reputation, a household. This ayah sets it beside the sky. Did you raise that? Did you spread this ground under your feet? The arrogance that resisted the Prophet ﷺ does not survive the comparison.

And the humility is not a loss. The person who knows he made neither sky nor earth can stop carrying the weight of the world. Someone else holds it. He is a guest in a dwelling built and furnished before he arrived, by the One who also made him.
