At-Tur 52:43
أَمْ لَهُمْ إِلَـٰهٌ غَيْرُ ٱللَّهِ ۚ سُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
“Or have they a deity other than Allāh? Exalted is Allāh above whatever they associate with Him.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The chain of questions ends at its root, any god but Allah, and answers itself in wonder: how far He is above every partner.
A reflection
Far above every rival we set beside Him
After a long series of questions, the ayah does something different. It asks one more, do they have a god other than Allah, and then it does not wait for an answer. It breaks into praise. Subḥāna Allāh: how far is Allah above what they associate with Him.
A concise commentary spelled out what that exaltation covers. He has no partner in His sovereignty, none in His oneness, none in worship. A classical commentator added that the phrase may mean exalted above their act of associating. Or it may mean exalted above the very things they associate, the 'daughters' they claimed or the idols they likened to Him.
The lexicons explain tasbīḥ as tanzīh: declaring Allah clear of everything unworthy, and tanzīh means putting at a distance. The Arabs said subḥāna about someone to mean: how far he is from that.
Picture a hospital consultant who has led a team through hundreds of hard operations. A junior doctor asks her how she carries the weight of so many lives. She says: I am a pair of hands. He decides. Then she goes back to scrubbing in. Her skill is real, and so is her refusal to take a seat that is not hers.
That is the posture this ayah teaches. The ego is always quietly setting something beside Allah: its own cleverness, its plans, its reputation, the approval of others. Each of these wants a share of the trust and love that belong to Him alone. Subḥāna Allāh is the believer's way of pushing them back to their proper distance.
And notice: the ayah does not ask Allah's permission to praise Him. It simply cannot hold the question 'is there another god?' without exclaiming. The wonder spills over. When someone truly sees Him, the idea of a rival is not only false. It is unthinkable.
