At-Tur 52:7
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّكَ لَوَٰقِعٌ
“Indeed, the punishment of your Lord will occur.”
Saheeh International
Essence
After five oaths comes the answer in four words: the punishment of your Lord will fall, and the One who warns is the One who raised you.
A reflection
As if my heart split open
A family takes the batteries out of a smoke alarm because it keeps beeping when they cook. It is a nuisance. Months later, staying at a cousin's house, they are woken at three in the morning by a working alarm. There is real smoke in the hallway. Everyone gets out. On the drive home, nobody says a word about the batteries, but the first thing the father does is put them back.
The commentaries preserve a fuller account of the night Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim heard this surah. He had come to Madinah to speak about the prisoners of Badr, and was not yet Muslim. He arrived as the Prophet ﷺ was leading the sunset prayer, and the recitation carried out of the mosque. He listened from the opening oath until this ayah and the next: the punishment of your Lord will surely fall; nothing can push it back. It was, he said, as if his heart had split open. He became Muslim out of fear that the punishment would come down. He did not think he would rise from where he stood before it fell on him.
This fuller wording is a report preserved in the commentaries and attributed to collections outside the two Sahihs. The core of the story, that he heard At-Tur in the sunset prayer and faith first settled in his heart then, is in al-Bukhari.
What broke through to Jubayr was not a gentle line. It was a warning. Modern readers are often uneasy with that. We prefer faith to arrive through comfort. But some people are reached only when an alarm finally goes off and they realise it was never false.
Fear is not the whole of faith. But it can be its door. Jubayr walked in through it and found everything else on the other side.
Ask yourself which alarm in your life you have been silencing because it is inconvenient. Put the batteries back today.
