At-Takwir 81:6

وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ

“And when the seas are filled with flame[1866]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The seas, the widest water we know and the last resort against every fire, will be stoked like an oven at His command.

A reflection

We made the sea drinkable

On the edge of a desert city, a desalination plant hums through the night. Seawater goes in at one end, and fresh water comes out at the other, enough for millions. Engineers show visitors round with justified pride. We have turned the sea into something we can drink.

It is a real achievement, and it is worth thanking Allah for the minds that built it. But notice the feeling it can leave behind. The sea, which drowned sailors for thousands of years, now looks like a resource on a spreadsheet. Tide barriers, sea walls and shipping lanes add to the sense that we have finally got the water under control.

This ayah uses a word from the kitchen. The first hearers knew the tannūr, a clay oven sunk in the ground. To sajara it was to pack it with fuel and fire it until the walls glowed. Sujjirat: the seas are stoked. The widest, deepest thing they knew, the thing that puts out every other fire, is handled like brushwood in an oven.

The word for sea, baḥr, was chosen for breadth: water so wide you cannot see its far shore. Yet even the widest thing in human language is a small thing to its Lord. It fills or burns at His word, like fuel in a village oven.

The ego takes each achievement as a step towards mastery. We tamed the river, drained the marsh, desalinated the sea. The next step feels close: nothing will be beyond us. The ayah answers by showing the sea itself obeying a single command, without any engineer involved.

Does Allah need us to be overwhelmed? He does not need anything from us. He tells us this the way a coastguard tells you the tide times. The warning is for the one on the beach. Knowing who commands the sea keeps a person humble in the harbour, and safe when the water turns.
