An-Najm 53:26

“And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allāh has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.”

Essence

Heavens crowded with angels cannot move one word on anyone's behalf until Allah permits it, so stop chasing connections and become someone He is pleased with.

A reflection

I know someone who can sort it

Every family has one. The uncle who leans back at the dinner table and says, 'Leave it with me. I know someone at the ministry. One phone call.' Sometimes the call works. Often it does not. But the uncle's pride lives on the idea that he has a line to power.

The idol-worshippers of Makkah thought about God the same way. They did not deny Him. They said the idols and the angels were their intercessors, the connections who would put in a word. This ayah answers with a picture of overwhelming scale. Wa-kam min malakin fī al-samāwāti: 'And how many an angel there is in the heavens.'

One commentary fills in the picture. The angels, with all their nearness to Allah, their closeness and their vast number, the heavens crammed with their throngs, if every one of them interceded together for a single person, it would not avail him in the slightest. Not unless Allah first gives permission.

Let that land on the ego. The noblest creatures in existence, in the highest place, all at once, cannot move one word without His leave. Another ayah says no one will even speak in that presence except one the Most Merciful permits (78:38).

So what becomes of our little networks of influence? The pride of knowing important people, the swagger of 'I can get you in', the quiet arrogance of the well-connected. Before Allah, none of it carries weight. There is no back door, no favour owed, no cousin on the inside.

This is humbling, and it is also fair. If heaven could be reached by connections, the poor and the unknown would lose. Because it cannot, the cleaner and the minister stand at the same door. A sceptic may ask whether God needs such control. He needs nothing. The closed back door protects us, not Him.
