Saheeh International
Essence
With a strength twisted tight like a well-made rope, the angel stood in his true form: what is firm is made, turn by turn.
A reflection
Strength is a rope twisted turn after turn
Mirra is one of those words the first hearers could feel in their fingers. The lexicons trace it to rope-making: amrartu al-ḥabl, I twisted the rope tight. One classical commentator explains the strength it names as the firm twisting of a rope, twisted on until it is very hard to undo.
Another commentator adds a lovely detail. The word marra means one time, once. Strength called mirra, he says, carries the sense of time after time: turn after turn of the twist, each adding to the last.
So the angel's strength in this ayah is pictured not as a lump of raw power, but as something wound. Tight, layered, and very hard to unravel.
That is how human strength is made too. Picture a woman who decides to start praying Fajr on time. The first week, every morning is a fight with the duvet. She loses twice. The second month it is still hard, but she no longer argues with herself. By the sixth month she wakes a minute before the alarm. Nothing dramatic happened on any single morning. She simply twisted the rope again, and again, and again.
We often wait for a single moment of resolve to change us: the New Year, the retreat, the dramatic decision. Those moments matter. But they are one twist. A rope made of one twist falls apart at the first load.
The Quran's word for strength invites a different method. Choose one small good thing. Do it today. Do it again tomorrow, especially when it is boring. Strength of character is not found; it is wound, one turn at a time, until it is very hard to undo.
