An-Najm 53:7
وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
“While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.[1564]”
Saheeh International
Essence
The angel stood on the highest horizon, where the morning comes from, and one created being filled the whole edge of the sky.
A reflection
One creature filled the sky
Picture a lone kayaker in a harbour mouth at dawn. A container ship begins to pass, slowly, a few hundred metres away. It does not end. Wall after wall of steel slides by until it fills every part of her view. The paddle in her hands suddenly feels like a matchstick. She has never felt so small, or so awake.
Now hear what the Prophet ﷺ saw. ʿAisha reports in the two Sahihs that he saw Jibril descending from the sky. The sheer size of his form filled everything between the sky and the earth. Ibn Masʿud reports in Sahih al-Bukhari that he had six hundred wings. Other reports in the commentaries say each wing alone filled the horizon.
One angel. A single created being, standing where the sun rises, and the edge of the world was not wide enough for him.
Let the scale settle before moving on. The angel is not the Creator. He is one servant among countless others. The Quran says no one knows the armies of your Lord but He (74:31). If one of them fills the sky, what is the One who made them all?
This is where our sense of our own size quietly corrects itself. The things that make us feel large, a title, a following, a house on the right street, are about the size of that paddle. Pride is what happens when we compare ourselves only with the people next to us in the harbour, never with the ship.
The feeling of smallness here is not humiliation. It is relief. The world was never resting on your shoulders. There are servants of Allah who fill horizons, and above them a Lord who holds everything. You can put your paddle down and look.
