An-Najm 53:62
فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩
“So prostrate to Allāh and worship [Him].”
Saheeh International
Essence
After every warning, the surah gives one answer: put your face on the ground for Allah, then let your whole life become worship.
A reflection
The boy left standing
A nine-year-old is at his first long night prayer in Ramadan, standing beside his father near the back. He has lost track of where the imam is in the recitation. Suddenly the imam says Allāhu akbar in the middle of standing, and the whole hall goes down at once, hundreds of foreheads to the carpet. The boy is left standing alone, astonished. His father's hand tugs at his sleeve. He drops.
He has just met the end of Surat An-Najm. Fa-sjudū li-llāhi wa-ʿbudū: so prostrate to Allah, and worship. And the reciter, reaching those words, did exactly what they say.
The first hearers met it the same way. Sahih al-Bukhari records the scene in Makkah. The Prophet ﷺ prostrated at the end of this surah, and those with him prostrated too, believers and others alike. The surah's last word was not explained to them first. It was enacted in front of them. Bodies went down before anyone had finished thinking.
That tells us something about the Quran that is easy to forget when we read it silently, alone, as a text. It was first a recitation, heard aloud, and it was meant to move the whole person. Some of its words are information. Some are invitations to reflect. And some, like this one, are instructions that ask to be carried out on the spot.
The boy will remember this night. Not because anyone told him about prostration, but because he was caught standing when everyone else had obeyed. In that moment, the ayah taught him more than a lesson could have: the body answers the Quran too.
So when you next read An-Najm, in a book or on a screen, do not let its last word stay on the page. Read the whole surah through, and when you reach fa-sjudū, let your body answer. You may feel, for a second, like the boy left standing. Then go down.
