Al-Qamar 54:42

كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍ

“They denied Our signs, all of them, so We seized them with a seizure of one Exalted in Might and Perfect in Ability.”

Essence

Pharaoh's court denied every sign it was shown, so it was taken the way only the Mighty, the All-Able takes: firmly, and without strain.

A reflection

Not unable, only waiting

High on a sea cliff, a pair of eagles nest on a ledge no climber has ever reached. Below them, gulls squabble and foxes hunt along the shore. Nothing down there can touch the nest. The eagles do not need to fight anything. They are simply out of reach.

The lexicons draw ʿazīz, mighty, from exactly that picture. A poet called the eagle ʿazīza because she nests on the highest peaks. The root means strength and hardness: ground so hard that rain runs off it and hooves cannot sink in. A thing became ʿazīz when it was so rare it could hardly be reached. This picture is established.

Then the ayah adds muqtadir, All-Able. One classical commentator explains why both are needed. A mighty one may defeat an enemy, he says, and still be unable to seize him: because the enemy has fled far, or is fortified. So the ayah says: the seizing of a Mighty One who was never unable. He was only granting respite.

That changes how we read Pharaoh's long reign. He was not out of reach while he boasted. He had fortresses, an army and a nation that obeyed him. He called himself their lord most high (79:24). None of it put him beyond reach for a moment. The delay was patience, not weakness.

This is where every ego is cut to size. Pride mistakes respite for safety. Because nothing has happened yet, it assumes nothing can. But the One who waits is not waiting because He must.

Is this Allah boasting of His strength? He is described this way so that we stop measuring ourselves against people and start measuring ourselves against Him. That is not humiliation. It is freedom from every smaller fear.

When you next feel untouchable, or feel someone else is, remember the eagle's ledge, and Who holds it.
