Al-Qamar 54:43

أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُم بَرَآءَةٌ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ

“Are your disbelievers better than those [former ones], or have you immunity in the scriptures?”

Saheeh International

Essence

After five ruined peoples, the surah turns to its listeners: are you any different from them, or has someone written you a guarantee?

A reflection

It will not happen to us

Five companies in the same sector collapse within two years, each after ignoring the same warning signs. The founder of a sixth reads every report and tells his board, cheerfully, that none of it applies. "We're different." He cannot quite say how. It is simply what he believes.

The ayah puts that belief into a question. A-kuffārukum khayrun min ulāʾikum: are your disbelievers better than those? Those are the five peoples the surah has just described, from Nūḥ's to Pharaoh's. The commentaries agree the question is a denial in the form of a question: no, they are not.

One classical commentator asks what "better" could mean when none of them had any good to boast of. He offers several answers. Better in their own estimation, since every generation thinks well of itself. Better in strength, since power is admired. Or the sharpest: does anything in you exist that could save you, that was not in them? Another commentator puts it bluntly. Are they stronger, better armed, of higher standing? Or less stubborn in their denial? In truth, he says, they are like those peoples, or worse.

This is one of the deepest habits of the human mind. We read history, the news, other people's stories, and quietly exempt ourselves. Illness happens to other families. Ruin happens to other nations. Consequences happen to other sinners.

The ayah does not argue with that habit. It simply asks for the evidence. What, exactly, makes you different? If you cannot name it, the exemption is imaginary.

Take one warning from the Quran that you usually read as being about "them". Read it once more, slowly, as if it were addressed to you by name. Then ask what you would have to change for it to be true that you are different.
