Al-Qamar · Makki · ayah 45 of 55
Al-Qamar 54:45
سَيُهْزَمُ ٱلْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَ
“[Their] assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in retreat].[1587]”
Saheeh International
Essence
To a hunted minority in Makkah, years before any battle, came five words: the host will be routed, and they will turn their backs.
A reflection
A rout announced before the war
No weather forecaster names the date of a storm seven years ahead. No analyst predicts which army will break before the army exists. Human foresight is short. Even our best guesses about next month are hedged with "probably".
This ayah was revealed in Makkah. One commentary records a report that seven years passed between its revelation and the Battle of Badr. Another notes that it came down when fighting had not been prescribed and no battle had taken place. The Muslims were, as another surah recalls, few and oppressed in the land (8:26). And the ayah said, flatly: sa-yuhzamu al-jamʿu, the host will be routed.
The little prefix sa- points to the future and, one commentator says, makes it certain: their host will be routed without fail. An early report describes a leading Companion puzzling over it at the time. Which host? Which will be beaten? He understood only on the day of Badr. One commentator calls it among the signs of the Prophet's truthfulness: he told of the unseen, and it happened as he told.
This is majesty, and it humbles every kind of planning pride. We schedule, forecast and project as if the future were ours to see. The One who spoke this ayah sees the end of every gathering before it gathers.
Why would Allah announce this in advance? Not to impress anyone; He needs no audience. It was mercy to a frightened community, a promise they could hold through years of persecution. And it was a warning to the confident: your numbers are already counted.
When your own plans feel uncertain, remember who already knows how they end. Plan carefully. Then hand the ending to Him, and rest.
