Al-Qamar 54:6

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍ نُّكُرٍ

“So leave them, [O Muḥammad]. The Day the Caller[1579] calls to something forbidding,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Step back from the argument, because a voice is coming that no one will argue with, calling to something no soul has seen.

A reflection

A face you cannot place

A woman steps off a long flight into an airport where every sign is in a script she cannot read. Arrows, words, warnings: all just shapes. Her mind keeps reaching for something familiar to hold, and finds nothing. For a few seconds she simply stands still while the crowd moves round her.

That is the feeling inside nukur. One lexicon defines the root by what it is not: the opposite of the knowing a heart settles into. Something arrives that the heart cannot picture, so the heart will not accept it. The lexicons quote an old line of verse. She did not recognise me, and all she failed to know was grey hair and a bald crown. A familiar face became one she could not place. This is established.

Now hear the ayah. The Caller will call to shayʾin nukur: to something the heart cannot place. Two commentators explain it as a terrible thing that souls refuse to accept, because they have never known anything like it. Others name it plainly: the standing for the reckoning.

Notice how little the ayah tells us. "Something". The vaguest word the language has. And "unrecognisable". The description works by refusing to describe. Everything we know is too small to compare it with.

There is a sobering thought here for a modern reader who has seen everything on a screen. We have watched earthquakes, wars and storms, filmed from every angle. We imagine nothing can truly shock us any more. The ayah says that one day will. It will be a sign in a script we have never seen.

Yet there is mercy hidden in the warning. The Quran has spent page after page describing that Day: its sounds, its scenes, its questions. Those who have read it attentively will not be entirely strangers there. They will have learned a few words of the script in advance.

So read the descriptions of the Day slowly. Let them become a little familiar now, so that on the day itself your heart has somewhere to settle.
