Al-Qamar 54:8
مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ
“Racing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult Day."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Those who turned their shoulder to every sign now run with necks stretched towards the Caller, and finally say something honest: this day is hard.
A reflection
From a turned shoulder to a stretched neck
An employee ignores months of messages from the head office. Training reminders, policy updates, invitations to meetings. Each one is archived unread. Then one morning the chief executive's assistant calls him by name and asks him to come up to the top floor now. He is out of his chair before the call ends, walking fast, eyes fixed on the lift doors.
Muhṭiʿīna ilā al-dāʿī. One lexicon roots the word in advancing towards something with compliance. Another describes a man who fixes his gaze on a thing and will not lift it. A camel was called by this name for its drooping, outstretched neck. The commentators gather the senses together. Hastening forward. Necks stretched out. Eyes fixed on the Caller and not leaving him. One early reading adds: ears opened wide towards the voice. Another: eyes staring up towards the sky.
Now set this beside the opening of the surah. In this world, when they saw a sign, they turned away. They showed it only their side. Their posture was a shoulder.
On the Day of the Caller, the shoulder is gone. The same people run with their whole bodies pointed at the voice. Necks stretched, eyes locked, ears open. Every part of them faces the call they once refused to face. One classical theologian glosses it simply: hurrying to him in submission.
The reversal is complete, and it is total compliance at the moment it no longer helps. The very obedience they withheld is now drawn from them without any choice.
That is the quiet invitation of this ayah. Every human being will one day stretch their neck towards the Caller. The only question is whether that posture will be new to us. The person who has turned towards Allah daily, in prayer and in listening, has practised it. For them it will feel like the last step of a long walk, not a sudden sprint after years of archiving.
