Ar-Rahman 55:13
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
“So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?[1594]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Not a chorus to hum along to but a question that waits for an answer, and the first listeners to give one were unseen.
A reflection
A question with only one honest answer
At an awards dinner, a businessman accepts a lifetime prize. His speech lasts eleven minutes. He describes the early mornings, the risks, the loan he took against his house, the competitors he outlasted. He thanks no one. Not his wife, not his first employees, not the bank manager who bent a rule for him. Nobody in the room is surprised. It is the story people like to tell about themselves.
This ayah is built to make that story impossible to finish. It does not say 'you have denied My favours'. It asks: which of them? It names no favour, and waits. And the honest answer is not a name. There is no favour in the list just recited that anyone can point to and say: that one was mine.
One commentary says the favours have reached such a point that even the obstinate cannot keep up his denial. The same commentary reads the dual address as able to cover every possible hearer, the way two exhaustive categories leave nothing outside them. Nobody is placed beyond the question.
That is what the question does to the ego. The self-made story depends on leaving the givers out. The question puts them all back in at once: the Quran, the voice, the sun and moon, the balance, the ground, the fruit, the grain. Try to find your own work in that list, and the speech gets very short.
A sceptic might hear a God fishing for acknowledgement. But a question asked by One who needs nothing (35:15) is not a request for applause. It is a mirror held up. The only person who loses by refusing to look is the one holding the prize.
