Ar-Rahman 55:15

وَخَلَقَ ٱلْجَآنَّ مِن مَّارِجٍ مِّن نَّارٍ

“And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.”

Saheeh International

Essence

A creation you will never see was made from the restless tip of a flame, and the surah names it beside you.

A reflection

Not the only audience

At a technology conference, a founder tells a packed hall that humanity is the only intelligence that matters in the universe. The future, he says, belongs to whoever builds the smartest machines. The applause is loud. Nobody asks who else might be listening.

This ayah quietly widens the room. And He created the jānn from a smokeless flame of fire. In one breath the surah introduces another creation: made of a different material, hidden from human eyes, and addressed by the same question. The 'you two' of the refrain now has a second face.

The commentaries read al-jānn as the father of the jinn, as Ādam is the father of humans, or as the jinn as a kind. Either way, the human being learns something unflattering. He is not the only creature to whom the favours are recited. He is not the only one answerable. He is not even the only one who has heard the Quran. A company of jinn listened to it and went back to their people as warners (46:29).

That is a correction to the ego of a whole species. Human pride often assumes the universe is a stage built for one audience. The surah shows a theatre with other seats, some of them in the dark.

A sceptic might call it an inflated claim, to announce an unseen creation as one's own. But the Maker gains nothing by having more creatures (35:15). It is the creature who gains, by learning the true size of the room. Humility is simply accuracy, once the hall turns out to be larger than you thought.
