Ar-Rahman 55:34
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
“So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?”
Saheeh International
Essence
After 'you cannot pass through', the refrain finds a favour in the closed walls: the One you cannot escape waits and pardons.
A reflection
Cornered by Someone who keeps giving you time
Most people carry an unspoken assumption about the idea that there is no escape from God. It is the bad news of religion. The good news is mercy, forgiveness, Paradise. The bad news is that you cannot get away.
This refrain refuses that split. It comes immediately after "you will not pass through, except with authority", and it calls what was just said a favour.
One later commentary names the favour precisely. Among the favours meant here, it says, are the alert, the warning, His leniency and His pardon, together with His complete power to punish.
Read that last phrase again. Leniency and pardon, together with complete power. The favour is not that you can get away. It is that you cannot, and He still waits.
The Prophet ﷺ put this in words that both Sahihs record. No one is more patient with harm that he hears than Allah. They claim He has a son, and still He gives them health and provision.
Think about what that sentence describes. The One from whom there is no exit hears every insult to Him, every day. It comes from people who could not run from Him for a second. And He feeds them. He heals them. He lets them wake up tomorrow.
That is the shape of the favour in this refrain. A creature that could escape would owe its survival to its own speed. A creature that cannot escape, and is still alive, still fed, still invited to return, owes everything to forbearance.
So the walls of 55:33 are not the bad news. They are the setting in which His patience becomes visible. Nobody notices the patience of someone they can walk away from.
Which favour will you deny? Perhaps this one: that every morning you wake inside His reach is a morning He chose to wait.
