Ar-Rahman 55:46

وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ جَنَّتَانِ

“But for he who has feared the position of his Lord[1603] are two gardens -”

Saheeh International

Essence

Two gardens are promised to whoever fears standing before his Lord; that fear is not a tremor but a step away from the cracked wall.

A reflection

Not the fear you feel before a lion

Most people hear "for whoever fears" and picture an emotion. A tightness in the chest, a trembling, the kind of anxiety some religious people seem to carry everywhere. If that is the qualification for two gardens, many readers quietly conclude they do not have it, or do not want it.

The lexicons say otherwise, and very precisely.

At its root, the word khawf is the expectation of harm from a sign, guessed or known. The Arabs called a road makhūf when bandits made people fear it. A wall was makhūf when people feared it would fall. Picture that wall, cracked and leaning over the path. You see the sign, and you step away.

Then one lexicon, quoted in a commentary on this very ayah, adds the decisive line. Fear of Allah is not meant as what comes to mind of terror, like the dread you feel before a lion. It means holding back from wrongdoing and choosing what is right. That is why, it says, no one is counted as fearing who does not leave sins.

A report from a Companion puts it the same way. The one who fears is the one who took up obedience to Allah and left disobedience.

So the fear in this ayah is not a feeling to be manufactured. It is a step. You see the leaning wall, and you walk on the other side of the street.

That is a great relief to anyone who has worried that they do not feel enough. The question is not how much you tremble. It is what you do at the crack in the wall.

A classical commentary adds a ladder above it. There is a higher reverence that comes from seeing the greatness of the One feared, and it belongs to those who truly know (35:28). If two gardens are for the one who merely fears, it asks, what do you think is for the one who reveres?
