Ar-Rahman 55:45

فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ

“So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?”

Saheeh International

Essence

The last refrain of the fire passage stands in a doorway: it looks back to the gifts that were denied and forward to the gardens.

A reflection

Which favour was denied, to end here?

Many people assume that Hell is for spectacular wrongdoing. Tyrants, murderers, the openly evil. Ordinary people, whose faults are small and familiar, picture themselves somewhere outside the frame.

The position of this refrain quietly dismantles that assumption.

It comes straight after the most vivid lines of the passage. This is Hell, which the criminals deny; they go round between it and boiling water (55:43-44). And a classical commentary asks the obvious question. These things, it says, are not favours. So how can the refrain call them favours?

It gives two answers. One is the answer we have met before: the warning itself is a kindness. The other is new, and sharper. The refrain here, it says, points back to the favours mentioned at the beginning of the surah. Which of those favours of your Lord will you deny, so that you come to deserve these things?

Read the opening again with that in mind. He taught the Quran. He created the human being and taught him clear speech. The sun and the moon by reckoning. The sky raised, the balance set, the earth laid out with fruit and grain. Two seas. Pearls and coral. Ships like mountains.

Nothing exotic. Language, food, the sky, the sea. The things of an ordinary day.

So the road to the Hell of 55:43 does not begin with some monstrous crime. It begins with taking the Quran, your own voice, your food and your sky as though no one gave them. Denial of the ordinary, repeated until it becomes a life.

That is uncomfortable, and it is meant to be. It places every reader inside the frame. But it also shows where the road can be left: at the next ordinary gift, received with thanks.

Which favour have you denied today? Start with the first one on the list.
