فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
“So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -”
Saheeh International
Essence
After companions 'kept in tents', the question turns to keeping itself: what Allah keeps hidden for us, and whom He asks us to keep.
A reflection
Presents in the loft before Eid
Most readers treat what is hidden as less real than what is seen. If I cannot picture it, it barely counts. The descriptions of the Garden are pleasant, but vague, and the vagueness feels like a weakness.
This refrain follows an ayah about companions 'kept in tents', screened from view. And the Garden's way of keeping things hidden is not a weakness. It is the point.
The Prophet ﷺ reported that Allah said: I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen and no ear has heard. It has never occurred to any human heart. Then he said: recite, if you wish, 'No soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort of the eyes' (32:17). Both Sahihs record it.
Hidden. Not missing. Kept back on purpose, because it is too good to describe. The descriptions in this surah are the part that can be told.
A family's children know the Eid presents are in the loft. They have heard the hatch open late at night. They do not know what is in the boxes. For a week, the not-knowing is part of the joy. On Eid morning, the wrapping paper is everywhere, and the youngest says it was even better than he had imagined.
That is the shape of the Garden's hiddenness. What is described in this surah, tents and pearls and springs, is what can be told. What is kept back is greater.
The refrain asks which of your Lord's favours you would deny. One quiet denial is to discount the Garden because you cannot see it clearly. The hadith turns that around. Its unseen part is the largest part.
When the Garden feels vague to you, remember the loft. The not-knowing is not emptiness. It is wrapping.
