Al-Baqarah 2:257

“Allāh is the Ally[105] of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light. And those who disbelieve - their allies are ṭāghūt. They take them out of the light into darknesses.[106] Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.”

Essence

Allah stays close to those who believe and leads them out of many darknesses into one light; every false patron leads the other way.

A reflection

Nobody climbs out of that shaft alone

Miners are trapped deep underground after a collapse. Days later a narrow steel capsule is lowered down a fresh shaft. One by one they are hauled up into floodlights. Not one of them climbs.

'Allah is the walī of those who believe. He brings them out of the darknesses into the light'. The verb belongs to Him: yukhrijuhum, He brings them out. The previous ayah asked the believer to let go and take hold. This ayah shows what happens next. The hand that took hold is lifted.

Walī has a picture in it. The root means nearness with nothing in between. The desert Arabs called the second rain of the season al-walī, because it followed hard on the first. The guardian of an orphan is his walī: the one who takes charge and provides. So the word is not distant patronage. It is One who is near, and who acts.

This is where the ego quietly shrinks. Many of us tell our faith as a story of our own achievement. I read, I reasoned, I chose. Some of that is true. But the ayah keeps the main verb for Allah. Pride wants to say 'I walked out of the dark'. Gratitude says 'I was brought'.

Someone may ask whether a God who calls Himself our protector is advertising Himself. Does He need the credit? No. A classical commentator explains the word as One who takes charge of what is good for a person. Allah's guardianship adds nothing to Him. He is free of all need (35:15). It is announced so that the one in the dark knows whose hand to reach for.

The miners did not thank the steel cable for being strong. They thanked the people who lowered it. Reach up, and know Who is lifting.
