Al-Waqi'ah 56:3
خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ
“It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].[1608]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Two words, two active participles, no subject named: lowering, raising, with every standing in the world read out again.
A reflection
Who actually does the lowering
A dry dock is a lesson in borrowed height. A ship comes in under tow, floating above the quay, and for a few hours it is the largest thing anyone can see. Then the gate is closed and the pumps start. The water goes out. The hull settles onto its blocks. By evening men in overalls are walking under the keel, looking up at plates nobody had seen for twenty years. Nothing was done to the ship. Something was done to the water it was resting on.
That is this ayah, and the grammar is worth noticing. Two feminine participles, side by side, with no subject stated: lowering, raising. Read on the surface, the Falling itself is doing it.
The commentaries will not let that stand. Arabic habitually credits an act to the time or place it happens in, they say. They give the ordinary examples: a sleeping night, a fasting day. The Quran itself speaks of "the scheming of night and day" (34:33). So the day is called the lowerer and the raiser as a matter of usage. The One who lowers and raises in truth is Allah alone. He raised those near to Him to the highest ranks, and lowered His enemies to the lowest depths.
Among the names recorded of Him is al-Khāfiḍ: the One who brings the tyrants down low.
Now look at what this does to the ego. We mostly believe we built our own height, and we defend it accordingly. Almost nobody defends the water. Yet every standing any of us holds floats on something we did not make. A passport, a language, a father's trade, a decade of health, a rising market. Pride is the strange conviction that the hull is tall by itself.
Someone will object. If He intends to reverse every ranking, why permit the rankings at all? Does He need to show us who decides? He is free of all need (35:15). The reversal is not a demonstration staged for an audience. It is simply the moment the water is let out and things are seen at their own height.
And there is rest in it. You can stop bracing a position you were never holding up.
